A 1-year-old boy whose father was out of town checking on the well-being of his other children in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., was killed Tuesday in a fire that destroyed the family’s mobile home in southwestern Michigan.
Firefighters were called to Leisure Estates in Holland Township at about 2 a.m. Trenton Harlen died of smoke inhalation and his 6-year-old sister Jasmine VanderHulst was hospitalized, the Grand Rapids Press reported.
A Detroit firefighter is in intensive care after suffering severe smoke inhalation in a vacant school fire early today.
The firefighter from Engine Company 58 on the city's east side was hurt at about 3 a.m. at Macomb Elementary School, 12021 Evanston, according to a source within the Detroit Fire Department. He's being treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and is expected to recover.
The fire broke out in a trailer set up behind the school to provide additional classroom space. The school, just west of Harper and East Outer Drive, was closed by the Detroit Public Schools, according to the district's Web site.

After months of battling with Detroit to get his job back, Detroit Fire Lt. Mike Nevin is expected to go back to work today.
The city fired Nevin for allowing members of his rig to take a door from an abandoned building, according to court records. He was reinstated, filed a whistle-blower lawsuit and reached a settlement with the city. But months later, he was fired again over the incident.
On Monday, Macomb County Circuit Judge Matthew Switalski upheld his original order that the city had to bring Nevin back to work, Nevin's attorney Paul Addis said.

Nevin has said he believes he is being retaliated against for being outspoken about his concerns with the department.
According to his 2009 lawsuit, Nevin told officials from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health that the personal alert device worn by a firefighter killed in a 2008 fire was found to be inoperable.
A fire broke out overnight at Preferred Filter Recycling in Detroit.
The call went out early Saturday morning. Firefighters said they heard several explosions coming from the building. Fire crews had their hands full as heavy flames and smoke could be seen for miles.
The business recycles and processes metals. Firefighters have not been able to go inside the building because of concerns of exactly what chemicals are inside.
A veteran Southfield firefighter continued to battle a blaze despite falling into the basement of Lathrup Village home Thursday morning.
FOX 2's Al Allen reports that Curtis Nelson walked into the home on the 18500 block of Glenwood and fell nearly 10 feet from the first floor and into the basement. Nelson, didn't sustain any major injuries and continued to battle the blaze before being pulled up.
