Woman Caught in the Middle of TX Warehouse Fire

Smoke could be seen as far as Horizon City after an abandoned warehouse caught fire in south central El Paso. One woman found herself driving right in the middle of the fire.

At around 11:15 a.m. Sunday, traffic was flowing along in south central El Paso.

"We were gonna go straight to get Alameda Street," said Josefina Cedeno.

Cedeno was on her way to check on her daughter.

"I have to go to the hospital because I have my daughter in the hospital," she said.

Around the 2300 block of East Mills Avenue she found herself unable to go anywhere.

"The car stopped right there and we couldn't move," she said.

Things didn’t get any better for Cedeno,“we saw some explosions from the wires," she said.

Several transformers started exploding, and a vacant, abandoned building at 2316 East Mills Avenue became fully engulfed in flames.

"The fire department started screaming at us to stop the car, don't do nothing cause the car could explode," said Cedeno.

Cedeno ran for cover. With the roof collapsed firefighters had no choice but to battle the flames from the outside. Hoses had to be pulled over the railroad tracks forcing Union Pacific to shut down for 45 minutes. Those were minutes that felt like hours for Cedeno, whose car couldn't be seen because of the thick smoke.

Fire Forces Rihanna Concert in Dallas (TX) to End Early

A fire broke out at a Rihanna concert in Dallas on Friday night, forcing the event to end early.

A video posted on YouTube shows a fire burning at the top of the stage at the American Airlines Center, with some sparks falling toward the floor. Some people begin to stream out.

The fire reportedly began due to pyrotechnics that were part of the show. There were no indications of any injuries.

Fire, Floods Threaten Nuclear Facilities

This morning, two separate United States nuclear facilities are threatened by fire and flood. In New Mexico, the Los Alamos National Laboratory (i.e. the "nation's nuclear weapons laboratory" according to Reuters), has been evacuated due to a "fast-moving" wildfire. In Nebraska, rising floodwaters have breached a protective berm surrounding the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant and the head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is headed to the facility.

At Los Alamos, special fire crews have been dispatched to protect the nuclear laboratory from a fire a mile away and the lab has said, "All radioactive and hazardous material is appropriately accounted for and protected," reports CNN. A statement on the lab's site reads: "All laboratory facilities will be closed for all activities and nonessential employees are directed to remain off site."

Pasadena (TX) Warehouse Fire Prompts Shelter-in-Place Order

A two-alarm fire destroyed a warehouse in Pasadena on Sunday and forced a shelter-in-place order for some residents.

A transformer blew during the blaze at Global Plastics Co., 6224 Spencer Highway, temporarily putting a Pasadena sewage treatment plant out of service. In addition, one of the more than 60 firefighters at the scene had to be treated for heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported.

Officials said the last employee left the facility around 3 p.m. Passers-by noticed the smoke from the recyclable plastics facility around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order that from the site to Beltway 8 and Red Bluff. It was later canceled. Hazmat was called to the scene because officials had concerns about hydrocarbons in the building.

OK Controlled Burn Takes Out Mobile Homes

Four mobile homes were destroyed by a grass fire — but only one that was occupied — Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Wind caught the flames from a controlled burn and sent fire into a densely wooded area near SE 29 and Pottawatomie Road about 2 p.m., Harrah Assistant Fire Chief Neal Young said.

The Country Haven Mobile Home Park, 3701 Pottawatomie Road, was evacuated as flames encroached upon the park from the north, he said.

Four mobile homes were destroyed and about 100 acres of grass and brush scorched, but only one injury was reported, Young said. A firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene.

Firefighter Injured Fighting WV Mobile Home Fire

A firefighter was in stable condition at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center after being injured Monday morning while attacking a mobile home fire in Jefferson County, Shepherdstown (W.Va.) Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Craig Simpson said.

Indianapolis (IN) Firefighters Cope with Fire and Rain

A heavy rain caused fires and floods in Indianapolis. Details from indystar.com:

The fast, heavy downpour flooded streets and kept emergency workers busy.

The Indianapolis Fire Department received 205 calls and went on 95 runs between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Twenty of the calls were for water rescues, mostly submerged cars, and 16 were for fires reported by residents who, in most cases, believed lightning struck their houses.

Capt. Rita Burris said no rescues had to be made of people in cars and none of the home were on fire.

But she said residents who think their home is hit by lightning should call 911 and evacuate immediately.

Chicago (IL) Fire Kills Infant Girl

An infant girl was killed this morning in a house fire on the city's West Side, authorities said.

Firefighters found 2-month-old Tiniya Coleman in a first-floor bedroom during a search of the 1-1/2 story home in the 800 block of North Laramie Avenue in the Austin neighborhood at about 2 a.m., officials said.

The child died at the scene.

Another Camden (NJ) Multi-Alarm: 7-Alarm Fire Destroys Plant

Firefighters remain on the scene of a massive warehouse fire in Camden - still a concern about 24 hours after it first started.

The fire broke out around 5:15 a.m. Sunday at the now vacant Concord Chemical Plant on the 1700 block of Federal Street in Camden.

Shortly after firefighters received reports of smoke coming from the building, flames began shooting from the upper floors.

Boy Killed in IL Mobile Home Fire; Relatives Injured

Investigators have not found the cause for a fire Tuesday night fire that killed a young boy and seriously injured his mother and two brothers, but authorities believe the blaze was accidental, said Chief Steve Plocher of the Highland-Pierron Fire Protection District.

Six-year-old Braedyn Schmitt died at the scene from smoke inhalation, said Alan Young, the Bond County coroner.

Plocher said the fire happened at about 10 p.m. Tuesday in the home of George and Candace Schmitt in the Country View Mobile Home Park off Illinois 143.

Braedyn's brothers and mother had severe injuries including burns and smoke inhalation, Plocher said.

Snake Causes Explosion, Fire at KY Substation

Utility crews are still trying to restore power to hundreds of people, after an explosion, caused by a snake, rocked a power substation.

People living in the Hickory Lane area of Berea say they heard the explosion around 1 Wednesday morning.

When firefighters and electrical crews arrived on the scene, they found the substation engulfed in flames.

Officials with East Kentucky Power and Blue Grass Energy say a snake sparked all the trouble.

"The snake did get into the equipment," Nick Comer with East Kentucky Power/Blue Grass Energy, said. "It did apparently cause a short circuit and caused the fire."

Comer says the explosions followed because of certain equipment that contains oil.

Firefighters had to let the fire burn itself out because of the oil and electricity.

Dad Leaves to Check on Kids in Joplin, MO; Son Dies in MI Fire

A 1-year-old boy whose father was out of town checking on the well-being of his other children in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., was killed Tuesday in a fire that destroyed the family’s mobile home in southwestern Michigan.

Firefighters were called to Leisure Estates in Holland Township at about 2 a.m. Trenton Harlen died of smoke inhalation and his 6-year-old sister Jasmine VanderHulst was hospitalized, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Three Killed in NC Mobile Home Fire

Investigators say three people died in an early morning mobile home fire Sunday in western Lincoln County.

It happened on Betterbrook Lane. An 18-year-old man in the home survived by jumping through a window to safety. Investigators say he ran to a neighbor's home to call 911.

Firefighters say the home was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Deputy Michael Luckadoo tried to get through the back door, but said he was pushed back by the flames.

Woman Killed, 2 Injured in Tulsa (OK) Warehouse Fire

A firefighter was also treated at the scene of this incident for heat exhaustion, according to the Tulsa World:

A woman was killed in a warehouse fire that sent two other people to a hospital suffering from smoke inhalation Tuesday night.


Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Tim Smallwood said the woman was found on the ground outside the building, which is on Trenton Avenue just north of Interstate 244, and that medics administered CPR before they took her to a hospital.

EMSA public information officer Chris Stevens said the woman was in critical condition when she was taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Medical Center. Smallwood said she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The two other people went to a hospital on their own and told a fire investigator there that they had been in a vehicle outside the warehouse and got blocked in by firetrucks.

1 Killed in Fire, Explosion at TN Ammo Shop

A report from News Channel 5:

One person was killed in a fire and explosion at an ammunitions store in South Nashville [TN]. A second person was injured.

The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. Monday at Well Done Bullets at 4813 Nolensville Pike.

Engineers were called out to determine if the building is structurally sound enough for fire crews to get back in the building to search for another possible victim.

Fire officials said there was some sort of explosion, and when they arrived on the scene the bottom corner of the building was full of flames.

TX Mobile Home Fire Kills 3 Children, 1 Adult

A mobile home fire in Conroe, Texas killed three children and one adult at approximately 2:41 a.m. Sunday morning. Five engines and a ladder company responded to the incident finding the mobile home totally engulfed in fire. The first firefighters to respond to the scene were approached by three injured people outside and advised that more people were inside the mobile home, according to reports from CNN.

The report continued to explain details of the incident:

"Two children between the ages of 3 and 8 were pulled out of a bedroom that was not involved in the fire but had heavy smoke. They could not be revived, Kreger said. Firefighters found another child between 3 and 8 and a woman, believed to be about 27years old, dead in another area."

The black plume of smoke Laurie Sharpe spotted during her morning walk Monday looked like it could be billowing from a backyard burn. It was what she noticed next — thick orange flames reaching into the sky above a home at 10813 N.E. 38th Ave. — that sent her rushing to see if anyone at a threatened ranch-style house needed help.

There was no one outside, but Sharpe could see a walker on the front porch.

It took four rounds of knocks before Donna R. Davis unlocked the door. Sharpe said the 86-year-old woman was reluctant to leave, wanting instead to stay and protect the home against flames that could be seen advancing. Davis planned to push back a fire engulfing a fifth-wheel type trailer with a garden hose.

A pastor at an area church, Sharpe said she navigated heavy black smoke to haul from the home a crate holding a black cocker spaniel. She said she then had to push Davis outside.

Davis was unharmed but shaken, said Dawn Johnson, a spokeswoman for Clark County Fire District 6. As crews worked to put out the blaze, Davis went across the street to a neighbor’s home.
